2nd Sunday After the Epiphany - January 16th - 2005

Scripture Readings:
Isaiah 49:1-7
Psalm 40:1-11
I Corinthians 1:1-9
John 1:29-42

"The Lord has called me before I was born."

According to the UMC lectionary commentary, the question raised by Isaiah 49:1-7, the text I have chose for this Sunday's sermon is "who embodies the servant qualities that are necessary for revealing the hiddness of God's salvation?"

Question: Do we, as the people of God, embody the qualities required to serve God or must God look elswhere to find a light for the nations? The question was first addressed to Israel. But, now, it is addressed to us both as individuals and as a denomination and as a local church in our own community.

As United Methodists we are committed to our theme of "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors" - How are we doing this? How easy is it to be open to others in a troubled world?
More on this later ...

*Do you speak through the imperfect? Or are we too dirty for your light to get through?*

This question immediately made me think of these lines from a song by Shaun Groves. Aren't those who have screwed up in the past perfect examples of God's redemption. Just like the prodigal son - God rejoices when the lost return.

In the real world, our openness to others who are troubled, seems to depend on if we can simply give money or do something at arms length. Without getting our hands dirty. We like to *say* that we are open to the community cause we do soup kitchen. But we whine about that. We like to say that Fall Dinner is a service to the community, but it is a frickin fundraiser! I'm a little jaded. But now you have comments that aren't just tests!

And yes, if someone is simply trying to add comments to this post, blogger will make them start a new account. To get around this you can add them as users to this specific blog and they will be able to make posts as well as comments.

Well, I think I managed to find the way to make a comment. We are speaking from Texas so will try not to get a southern accent that makes us hard to understand.
